About Us
Gig Engage is an Australian owned private company aimed at fostering and enabling a robust fair Australian gig economy that embraces diversity and where possible strengthens business relationships with economically excluded and marginalised businesses and individuals. We focus on creating pathways across the Australian workforce supply chain to assist companies to identify demand and source their short-term contracting requirements.
We aim to provide our clients with all the benefits of participating in the gig economy with a focus on addressing and removing the bias and inequity that exists today.
Gig Engage works with Corporate and Government Enterprises to promote direct and indirect engagement with indigenous business and disability enterprises to boost their involvement in the real economy and help create employment, sustainable growth and social and financial inclusion.
We do this by working with:
-
Corporate and Government enterprises to assist them to identify and assess talent demand requirements, to develop social inclusion policy and associated action plans, to align and access government social inclusion initiatives and to measure and report on the success of those initiatives
-
Individuals and Communities to promote their capabilities and connect them with corporate and government enterprises seeking talent. We will help them to understand corporate and government demand requirements and if applicable connect them with registered training organisations to acquire and develop the skills that are most in demand
-
Employee Candidates and providing ongoing talent management services
-
Existing Indigenous Businesses and NDIS providers to connect and fulfil corporate and government demand for their services; and
-
Registered Training Organisations to develop pathways and provide training and learning opportunities for individuals that align with corporate demand – both current and future skill requirements

What is the Gig Economy
The gig economy is part of a shifting cultural and business environment that involves organisations engaging independent workers or freelancers for short-term engagements. The term "gig" is a slang word meaning "a job usually for a specified time"[1] and has typically been used in referring to work performed by musicians. Examples of gig employees in the workforce could include freelancers, independent contractors, project-based workers and temporary or part-time hires. The work can range from highly complex, technical projects to more simple engagements such as walking dogs (Airtasker) and driving cars (Uber).
McKinsey[2] have estimated that 20-30% of the working population are currently engaged in the gig economy in some way.

Benefits of the Gig Economy
The Gig Economy provides a number of benefits to both employees and employers alike. Examples include, but are not limited to:
-
Employers gain access to resources for short defined engagements. This can improve productivity and utilisation of the workforce and can provide additional benefits in terms of reductions in office space and training requirements. Employers can scale quickly to fulfil requirements and importantly, employers can engage unique or specific expertise for projects that may not have an ongoing requirement for full-time employment.
-
Employees gain improved control over how, when and where they work. They can improve their work-life balance over what is possible in most jobs, they can select the jobs that they are interested in and gain visibility and access into multiple companies improving their breadth of knowledge and experience.
Challenges of the Gig Economy
A quick search of the Internet and you will find dozens of research papers that identify a propensity for digital platform providers to exacerbate discrimination or bias in the selection and hiring process.
The gig economy promotes a hypercompetitive, fast-paced world of online labour hire where candidate selection and wages are often determined on the basis of little verifiable information about each individual worker. These conditions favour the activation of stereotypes and biases about “appropriate” jobs for candidates based on sex, race, age, disability and country of origin.
